Spiced Chinese cabbage is a quick vegetable dish where Chinese cabbage is steamed with carrots, onion, thyme, and garlic in broth, then seasoned with soy sauce. The cabbage should still have some bite when served. Good as a side dish with everything from meatballs to pan-fried pork belly.
Ingredients
Yields 4 servings
- 500 g Chinese cabbage
- 250 g carrots, peeled and sliced
- 1-2 onions, sliced (about 200 g)
- 200 ml broth
- ½ tsp thyme
- 1 small bay leaf
- 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
- 1-2 tbsp soy sauce
- salt, to taste
Directions
Cook carrots and onion
Cook the carrots and onion in the broth with thyme, bay leaf, and garlic for 5–6 minutes.
Add the Chinese cabbage
Rinse the cabbage and cut it crosswise into ½ cm wide pieces. Add the cabbage and steam it together with the vegetables for another 5–7 minutes. The cabbage should still be slightly crisp.
Serving
Season with soy sauce and salt if needed. Serve as a side dish.
Notes
- Chinese cabbage should be crisp when served — don’t oversteam it.
- Works well alongside meatballs, smoked pork loin, chicken, pork chops, and pan-fried pork belly.
- Can also be served as a light main with fried eggs and rye bread.
- Chinese cabbage looks like a romaine lettuce in shape, but has a broader central rib.
