Recipe with video — Millionbøf was my favourite meal as a child. When I moved out I struggled for a while to get it tasting like my mum’s. Eventually I got there. Now it tastes the way I remember it, and everyone here at home loves it.
Ingredients
- 1 large (or 2 medium) onions
- 500 g minced beef
- 3 tbsp flour
- oil, for frying
- ½ l water
- 1 cube (or 1 tbsp) chicken stock powder
- 3–4 bay leaves
- 2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
- ground pepper — at least 1 tsp
gravy browning (optional — skip if you like grey food :-S)
Directions
Chop the onions coarsely.
Fry the onions in oil in a hot pot.
When the onions start to brown, add the meat and brown it well too.
Add the flour to the browned meat. Stir thoroughly so there are no lumps.
Add the water and bring to a boil while stirring.
Add the stock cube, salt, pepper and bay leaves.
Add a splash of gravy browning for colour.
Simmer for half an hour so the sauce develops flavour and the floury taste disappears.
Notes
It’s important to brown the onions and the meat well. That’s half the flavour right there.
Pepper and bay leaves are the other half. So they matter too.
