Spiced Chinese Cabbage

Spiced Chinese cabbage is a quick vegetable dish where Chinese cabbage is steamed with carrots, onion, thyme and garlic in stock, then seasoned with soy sauce. The cabbage should still have some bite when served. Good as a side dish for everything from meatballs to fried pork belly.
Ingredients
Yields 4 servings
- 500 g Chinese cabbage
- 250 g carrots, peeled and sliced
- 1–2 onions, sliced (approx. 200 g)
- 2 dl stock
- ½ tsp thyme
- 1 small bay leaf
- 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
- 1–2 tbsp soy sauce
- salt to taste (optional)
Directions
Cook the carrots and onion
Simmer the carrots and onion in stock with the thyme, bay leaf and garlic for 5–6 minutes.
Add the Chinese cabbage
Rinse the cabbage and cut it across into ½ cm wide strips. Add the cabbage and steam it together with the vegetables for a further 5–7 minutes. The cabbage should still be slightly crisp.
Serving
Season with soy sauce and salt if needed. Serve as a side dish.
Notes
- Chinese cabbage should be crisp when served — do not overcook it.
- The dish goes well with meatballs, boiled ham, chicken, pork chops and fried pork belly.
- Can also be served as a main dish with fried eggs and crusty bread.
- Chinese cabbage resembles a cos lettuce in shape, but has a wider central rib.
