Air Fryer Avocado Fries
Air Fryer Avocado Fries
Avocado fries are wedges of ripe-but-firm avocado, breaded and cooked hot in the air fryer until the panko shell turns golden and crisp while the center stays warm and creamy. This is a snack or starter, not a main dish — a handful of wedges with a sharp dip on the side.
The breading follows the usual three-stage setup: seasoned flour, beaten egg, then panko. The flour carries chili powder, garlic powder, and paprika, so the crunch has some heat built into it rather than relying only on the dip. A light spray of oil on both sides is what gets the panko to brown in the air fryer instead of just drying out.
The point is the contrast — a crisp, well-seasoned shell around a soft, barely-cooked avocado center that stays creamy rather than turning mushy. The fries are best eaten straight from the air fryer; once they cool, the shell softens and they do not reheat well.
This is a modern American snack with no single traditional version — it grew out of the wave of easy air-fryer recipes from home-cook food blogs. A lime and Greek yogurt dip is the classic pairing, sharp enough to cut through the fried coating; a smoky chipotle dip works just as well.
Ingredients
Serves 4 as an appetizer (about 16 wedges)
The fries
- 2 large ripe-but-firm Hass avocados (about 150 g flesh each), peeled and pitted
- 40 g all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp fine salt
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp chili powder (or 1¼ tsp Tajín / chili-lime seasoning, in which case reduce the salt)
- ¼ tsp paprika
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten (optional: 1 tbsp milk or cream, whisked in)
- 50 g panko breadcrumbs
- oil spray (avocado or neutral oil), for both sides
The lime dipping sauce
- 60 ml plain Greek yogurt, 0% fat
- 3 tbsp light mayonnaise
- 2 tsp fresh lime juice
- ½ tsp chili-lime seasoning (e.g. Tajín)
- ⅛ tsp kosher salt
Directions
The fries
Heat the air fryer to 390°F (199°C). Peel and pit the avocados, then cut each half lengthwise into wedges about 1 cm thick.
Set out three shallow bowls: one with the flour mixed with the salt, garlic powder, chili powder, paprika, and black pepper; one with the beaten egg; and one with the panko.
Coat the wedges one at a time. Turn each wedge through the seasoned flour and shake off the excess, dip it in the egg, then press it into the panko until it is covered on all sides.
Rub a little oil into the air fryer basket and arrange the wedges in a single layer with space between them, cooking in batches if they do not all fit. Spray both sides of the wedges with oil.
Air-fry for 7-8 minutes, turning the wedges over and spraying them again halfway through, until the coating is golden and crisp.
The lime dipping sauce
While the fries cook, stir together the yogurt, mayonnaise, lime juice, chili-lime seasoning, and salt to make the dip.
To serve
Serve the avocado fries hot, straight from the air fryer, with the lime dip on the side.
Notes
For a lighter coating, skip the flour dredge and go straight from egg to panko, folding the spice blend into the panko instead of the flour.
Without an air fryer, bake the wedges at 425°F (218°C) on an oiled or parchment-lined baking sheet for 12-14 minutes, flipping halfway through.
For a shallow deep-fry, cook the wedges in about 120 ml oil, 2-3 minutes per side.
A chipotle dip works as a substitute for the lime sauce: stir together mayonnaise or sour cream with a little minced chipotle in adobo, lime juice, and a pinch of salt.
Use avocados that give slightly to gentle pressure — very soft ones fall apart during breading. The fries do not keep or reheat well, so serve them as soon as they are done.
