Air Fryer Frozen French Fries
Air Fryer Frozen French Fries
Bagged frozen fries go straight from the freezer to the air fryer basket, no thawing, no pot of hot oil. Circulating hot air does the same job a deep-fryer does, with a lot less mess: crisp, golden edges and a soft, fluffy centre.
This is a technique recipe rather than a from-scratch one. The fries themselves are the shop-bought bagged kind, straight-cut, crinkle-cut, shoestring, waffle, or steak-cut, and the job is just to get them hot and crisp without babysitting a pan of oil. Most bags are already lightly coated in oil, so extra oil is optional and only worth adding for a bit more crunch.
Cook time depends on the cut. Thin shoestring fries crisp up in well under ten minutes, while thick steak fries need closer to fifteen. Shake the basket partway through so every fry gets some direct air, and season with salt only after they come out of the basket, salting them beforehand just makes them soggy.
Serve hot, straight from the basket, as a side for burgers, sandwiches, or anything else that wants a pile of fries next to it.
Ingredients
Serves 4
- 460 g frozen French fries (straight-cut, crinkle-cut, shoestring, waffle, or steak)
- oil spray, optional
- salt (or seasoned salt), to taste, added after cooking
Directions
If your air fryer benefits from a preheat, run it empty at 400°F (204°C) for 2-3 minutes first. This step is optional, the fries cook fine from a cold start too, just add a minute or two to the time.
Tip the frozen fries straight into the basket, no thawing first. Spread them in a single layer and keep the basket no more than about half full so hot air reaches every side; cook in batches if your bag makes more than one load. If the fries aren’t already oil-coated, or you want them extra crisp, give them a light spray of oil now.
Air fry at 400°F (204°C), shaking the basket once around the 5-minute mark and again if needed. Timing depends on the cut: shoestring or other thin-cut fries take about 7-9 minutes, waffle fries about 10-12 minutes, straight-cut and crinkle-cut fries about 12-14 minutes, and thick steak fries 14-18 minutes, start checking those at 12. Go by how they look and feel rather than the clock alone, air fryers vary by brand and wattage, and pull them once they’re hot, golden, and crisp.
Season with salt or seasoned salt to taste and serve right away, while they’re still crisp.
Notes
Always cook straight from frozen. Thawed fries turn soggy in an air fryer.
Cooking more than one batch? Return everything to the basket for a final 2-3 minutes at 400°F (204°C) to reheat and re-crisp before serving, or hold finished batches in a low oven at 250°F (120°C).
For extra-crisp fries, try a two-stage method: cook at 360°F (180°C) for about 12 minutes, shake and mist with a little more oil, then finish at 400°F (204°C) for about 8 minutes.
Pre-fried “quick-cook” bagged fries need only reheating rather than a full cook, check them a few minutes early so they don’t overcook.
