Air Fryer Garlic Bread
Air Fryer Garlic Bread
Garlic bread is an Italian-American staple, and the air fryer turns out a version that beats the oven for speed: crisp, golden edges in under ten minutes, no long preheat, no full-size oven running just for a side dish. A loaf of French bread or a baguette gets split or sliced, coated with a garlicky butter, and air-fried in a single layer until the crust crackles and the top turns deep gold.
The base is a compound butter: softened butter worked with fresh minced garlic, usually with grated parmesan and chopped parsley mixed in. Garlic and butter do the real work — cheese is common but optional, and extras like Italian herbs or a pinch of chili flakes are strictly to taste. Whatever goes in, it’s spread thickly over the cut or top surface of the bread before it goes into the basket.
Cooked this way, the bread comes out with a crisp, toasted crust and a soft, garlicky, buttery interior, with melted parmesan on top if it’s included. It cooks in one batch or two, no flipping required, and it’s best eaten warm, straight out of the basket.
It’s a natural side for pasta, soups, and salads, or anything else that benefits from something to mop up sauce with.
Ingredients
Serves 6
The bread
- 1 loaf French bread (about 300-350 g), halved lengthwise (or 1 baguette, cut into 1.5 cm slices)
The garlic butter
- 113 g salted butter, softened
- 3-4 cloves garlic (about 10 g), minced
- 45 g parmesan, freshly grated (optional but recommended)
- 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (or 1 tsp dried), plus extra for garnish
- 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning (optional)
- 1 pinch red pepper flakes (optional)
Directions
The garlic butter
Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
While it heats, mix the softened butter with the minced garlic, parmesan, and parsley in a bowl, along with the Italian seasoning and red pepper flakes if using. Work it into a smooth, spreadable paste — if the butter is too firm to blend easily, soften it a few seconds in the microwave rather than adding a splash of liquid.
The bread
Halve the loaf lengthwise, or cut the baguette into slices about 1.5 cm (1/2 inch) thick. Cut any pieces down further if needed so they fit the air fryer basket in a single layer.
To finish
Spread the garlic butter evenly and generously over the cut or top surfaces of the bread, right out to the edges.
Arrange the bread butter side up in the basket in a single layer, without letting pieces touch or overlap — crowd the basket and the bread steams instead of crisping. Work in batches if it doesn’t all fit at once.
Air-fry for 5-6 minutes, until golden and crisp on top. There’s no need to flip. For a softer result, pull it at 3-4 minutes; for a deeper, crunchier crust, let it go 6-7 minutes.
Scatter with extra fresh parsley, slice, and serve immediately while it’s still warm.
Notes
Keep the butter genuinely soft before mixing so it spreads without tearing the crumb.
To make ahead, spread the garlic butter on the bread, then freeze the pieces flat in a single layer until solid before transferring them to an airtight container. Air-fry straight from frozen at 340°F (170°C) for 5-7 minutes.
Store-bought frozen garlic bread (Texas toast or a frozen loaf) can go straight into the air fryer too, butter or cheese side up, no thawing or flipping needed - around 380°F (190°C) for 4-5 minutes, checking a little early since air fryer models vary.
Leftovers keep for 3 days refrigerated; reheat at 350°F (175°C) for 1-2 minutes.
