Air Fryer Tater Tots
Air Fryer Tater Tots
Air fryer tater tots are just what they sound like — a bag of frozen tater tots cooked in an air fryer instead of an oven or a deep fryer. Nothing needs to be added: the tots already come oiled and seasoned. What the air fryer buys you is speed and a mostly hands-off crisp, hot air moving around each tot instead of a pool of oil in a pan.
Tater tots are an American invention from the 1950s, created by the Ore-Ida company as a way to use up potato scraps left over from french fry production — shredded bits of potato pressed into small cylinders and fried. The air fryer is just a modern way to cook them; the tots themselves haven’t changed.
The whole method comes down to one rule: keep the tots in a single layer. Stack them on top of each other and the ones underneath steam instead of crisping, coming out pale and soft. Spread out with room around each one, they turn deep golden and crackly on the outside while staying soft inside, and a single shake of the basket halfway through is enough to brown them evenly on all sides.
Served plain with ketchup or another dip, they’re a quick side or snack. Loaded with melted cheddar, bacon, and a scattering of sour cream, green onion, and diced tomato, they turn into totchos — a nacho-style plate that suits a game-day spread or a party table.
Ingredients
Serves 4
- 454 g frozen tater tots
- oil spray, for extra-golden tots (optional)
- salt (or seasoning), to taste (optional — tots are pre-seasoned)
Directions
Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for two to four minutes. This isn’t strictly necessary, but it helps the tots crisp up.
Tip the frozen tots straight into the basket and spread them out in a single layer, without stacking — cook in batches if the basket isn’t big enough to hold them all at once. If you want extra-golden color, give them a light spray of oil now, and add salt if you like.
Air-fry at 400°F (200°C) for 12 to 15 minutes, shaking the basket once around the halfway point so every side gets exposed to the hot air.
Check the tots once the timer stops. If you want them extra crisp, give them another two to four minutes. Season to taste and serve immediately, while they’re still hot.
Notes
Cook the tots straight from frozen every time — don’t thaw them first, or they turn mushy.
For an extra-crisp result, try the two-stage method instead: cook 15 minutes at 350°F (180°C), then raise the temperature to 400°F (204°C) for another three to five minutes.
Mini tots cook faster than standard ones — start checking at around five minutes.
Reheat leftovers in the air fryer at 350–375°F (175–190°C) for three to five minutes rather than in the microwave, which leaves them soft.
Times vary by air fryer model and wattage, so judge by color and crispness rather than the clock — deep golden with crisp edges is what you’re after.
For loaded tater tots, or “totchos”: pile the crispy tots into an air-fryer-safe pan, scatter over shredded cheddar and any cooked, crumbled bacon or pickled jalapeños, and return to the air fryer at 350°F (176°C) for one to two minutes, just to melt the cheese. Finish with sour cream, sliced green onion, and diced tomato only after it comes out of the fryer, so the wet toppings don’t turn the tots soggy.
