Air Fryer Jalapeño Poppers
Air Fryer Jalapeño Poppers
Air fryer jalapeño poppers are jalapeño halves stuffed with a cream cheese and cheddar filling, topped with buttery panko breadcrumbs, and air-fried until the peppers are tender and the topping is golden and crisp. The whole thing takes well under half an hour and skips the deep fryer and the mess that comes with it.
The filling is simple: softened cream cheese beaten with shredded sharp cheddar and garlic powder, with onion powder, black pepper and diced bacon as common additions. Halving the jalapeños and scraping out the seeds and white membrane first tones down the heat, since most of it lives in those parts, leaving a milder pepper flavor behind.
Cooked this way, the peppers turn tender while the panko topping browns and crisps in the hot air, so each bite has a contrast of textures — soft, warm, cheesy filling under a crunchy, buttery crust, with a little bite of pepper running through it.
Jalapeño poppers are American bar food with roots in Tex-Mex cooking, popular since the 1980s as a deep-fried appetizer. The air fryer is just a newer, less greasy way to cook the same idea: a crisp shell around a hot, creamy filling. They are built for sharing — serve them warm as a party snack or appetizer, plain or with a bowl of ranch or sour cream on the side for dipping.
Ingredients
Serves 6
The peppers
- 12 medium jalapeños (about 15–20 g each), halved lengthwise, seeds and membranes removed
The filling
- 170 g cream cheese, softened
- 85 g sharp cheddar, shredded (or pepper jack)
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ¼ tsp onion powder (optional)
- ⅛–¼ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper (optional)
- 4 slices cooked bacon, finely diced (optional)
The topping
- 28 g panko breadcrumbs
- 14 g butter, melted (or olive oil)
- nonstick cooking spray
Directions
The peppers
Put on a pair of gloves, then halve each jalapeño lengthwise. Scrape out the seeds and the white membrane inside with a small spoon — that’s where most of the heat is, so removing it gives a milder pepper. Set the halves aside.
The filling
Beat the softened cream cheese with the shredded cheddar, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and black pepper until smooth and evenly combined. If using bacon, stir three-quarters of it into the filling now and set the rest aside for garnish.
Mound about a tablespoon of the filling into each jalapeño half, and arrange the halves filling-side up.
The topping
Toss the panko with the melted butter (or olive oil) until every crumb is coated, then spoon it evenly over the filled peppers. Mist lightly with cooking spray so the topping browns evenly.
To cook
Arrange the peppers in a single layer in the air fryer basket, working in batches if they don’t all fit without touching. Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 6–8 minutes, checking at the 5-minute mark, until the jalapeños are tender and the panko is golden brown.
To serve
Sprinkle the reserved bacon over the top and serve warm.
Notes
Don’t overcook. Pull the poppers as soon as the panko is golden and the peppers are just tender — leave them in much longer and they go soft and floppy, and the filling starts to spill out.
For a bacon-wrapped, low-carb version, skip the panko altogether. Wrap each stuffed half with a slice of raw bacon, secure it with a toothpick, and air fry at 325°F (163°C) for 10–14 minutes, until the bacon is crisp. Par-cooking the bacon for about 6 minutes first gives extra crunch. For a no-bacon version, top with extra shredded cheddar instead.
Instead of sprinkling the panko on top, you can press the filled side of each half directly into the buttered crumbs for a thicker, denser crust.
Light cream cheese works fine, but full-fat gives a richer, more stable melt.
The peppers can be stuffed up to a day ahead — cover and refrigerate, then add the panko topping just before cooking. They can also be frozen fully assembled and air-fried straight from frozen, adding 2–3 minutes to the cook time.
Leftovers keep in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in the air fryer rather than the microwave, which turns the panko soggy.
No air fryer? Bake the panko version in a regular oven at 350°F (177°C) for about 8 minutes.
Gluten-free panko or crushed tortilla chips work as a swap for regular panko.
